Editor Tools Guide - Foldbook Studio Documentation
I built the Foldbook Studio editor because I was tired of bouncing between Photoshop, Illustrator, and manual spreadsheets just to fold a book. Here is how I actually use the tools I built.
The Main Tools
The Text Engine
I spent a lot of time on this. Not all fonts fold well. I curated the font list here so you can add custom text, mess with character spacing, and know it will actually be readable when folded.
The Shape Library
Don't try to import overly complex clip art. I stocked this library with silhouetted icons that I know for a fact fold cleanly without turning into abstract blobs.
Wrangling Layers
If you're making anything more complex than a single word, you're going to need layers. Here's how I use them:
- Stacking: Move backgrounds behind text so the cuts register properly.
- Merging: This is my favorite feature. I combine overlapping shapes into a single solid silhouette. No more weird intersecting cut lines.
- Locking: The most underused feature. Once I have the main shape centered, I lock it so I don't accidentally drag it while adding smaller details.
Dialing in the Math
I do not trust my eyes. When I want an element perfectly centered, I rely on the properties panel:
| X / Y | Stop dragging and guessing. Just punch in the exact coordinates to snap your design where you need it. |
| Scale | Always scale from here if you want to make sure your heart icon doesn't stretch into an egg. |
| Rotation | Need a slanted font? Just rotate the whole text block a few degrees. |
